Three years of thermal monitoring in tropical climate
Three residential towers in Singapore covered with planted terraces showed consistent temperature differences compared to conventional buildings nearby. Thermal sensors recorded data every hour from 2022 through 2024. The vegetated buildings stayed 4.2 degrees Celsius cooler on average during afternoon hours.
Architect Heino Tamm designed the irrigation system to capture and recycle rainwater. The setup uses 40 percent less water than ground-level landscaping per square meter of vegetation. Each building has 15 plant species selected for heat tolerance and minimal maintenance requirements.
Maintenance Reality
Monthly upkeep costs run at 8 euros per square meter of planted area. This includes pruning, pest management, and replacing plants that die. Some skeptics predicted maintenance would become unaffordable, but costs have remained stable across three years of operation.
The buildings also recorded 22 bird species using the planted terraces, including species rarely seen in dense urban areas. Residents reported reduced air conditioning use, with utility data confirming an average 18 percent decrease in cooling energy consumption compared to similar buildings without vegetation.
