The city also stopped removing so-called weeds from sidewalk cracks and building edges. These tiny habitat patches became surprisingly important. Camera surveys showed bees visiting crack vegetation more frequently than formal planted beds in some districts.

Critics said unmowed grass looked messy and would generate complaints. Surveys showed 68 percent of residents supported the changes once they understood the reasoning. The approach costs less than intensive maintenance, which helped secure continued funding through budget reviews.
